Pittsburgh as well as across the country on this day in 2003 mourned the passing of children's TV icon Mr. Rogers. Today, on the 5 year anniversary of his passing, another Pittsburgh icon has passed on and that was of Myron Cope, who was until 2004 the color commentator 0f the Steelers. There was a lot about Myron with his raspy voice and those of you who watch NFL films will recognize his voice many times talking in the Super Bowl XIII highlight video after Rocky Bleier scored a touchdown that he caught the pass like ballet dancer Lenard Najinsky. Myron was also well known for working at WTAE Radio and television. He had the highest rated evening radio show for the city for many years. Myron one time said that if Oakland beat Cincinnati in a meaningless game, he was going to swim the Monongahela River and Oakland won and a few months later swam the Mon and Mike Schneider, who would later be on ABC's "Good Morning America" as news anchor in the early 1990's and then went to NBC was there to interview him. He did an advertisement for the convenience store Stop-N-Go where he was the cashier as Matt Bahr in 1980 was kicking groceries into the bag. He also as the Steelers and Pirates were winning did video spoofs of M. C. Hammer's "You Can't Touch This" and Billy Ray Cyrus's version of "Achy Breaky Heart". He also was a scientist dissecting the opponent the Steelers would play in COP-RA-SCOPE. I had to live through Myron because my dad in the winter months didn't trust John Domenick's weather forecast and tuned to WTAE to see what Joe DeNardo had in his weather forecasts. (DeNardo was a Meteorologist, Domenick was not) I always listened in recent years to Steeler games on radio while having the TV sound on mute because you must remember there are different TV announcers calling NFL games and at first without Myron, it wasn't the same for a while in the radio broadcasts after he left. Myron also had supported the autism cause since his son has it. Myron will be missed by those who live around Pittsburgh.
