Long time Bridge Street Social Studies Department Head Charles Elston once remarked about Pam Spargo's army type voice as "The Sweet Voice". Well, the sweet voice was silenced Thursday at Wheeling Hospital at the age of 59. Mrs. Spargo retired from Bridge Street after the 2004-05 School Year and when with Bridge Street, she was the Physical Education Chairperson at the school. Not only did Spargo teach Physical Education, she was the 'Jill of all trades'. She did bus duty, no matter if it was 15 degrees or even 95 degrees outside, she chaperoned school dances and put in her thoughts at Faculty Senate Meetings plus also took tickets at Bridge Street ball games. Spargo had a love for Chipmunks, her home off the Peters Run exit heading to Oglebay Park was called Chipmunk Run and I guess had a love for John Wayne films because one time she was telling Libby Shepherd, a long time Phys. Ed. Teacher that she would watch him in a film one night coming home from a Parent Teacher Conference and Shepherd had told her that Wayne died for a while now and Spargo said "I know John Wayne's Dead" 2 things I remember vividly about Pam was a quote that was printed in a then 1984 Bridge Street Junior High newspaper, "Let's go to the Gym, throw your gum out" and also in 1992 at a Christmas awards assembly, Pam, who always wore pants being a Phys Ed. Teacher decided to wear a dress suit that night and somehow slipped into a puddle and fell. Michael Sebulsky, a neighbor was a student there at the time and it had already changed to a Middle School format. There will never be another Pam Spargo, she goes to that great big Gym in the sky.
